Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center (SDAC) is the only state-level dramatic company in Shanghai, as well as one of the top companies in China. It has collected a group of professional playwrights, directors, actors, and stage designers. SDAC also has three professional theaters of dierent size and function. SDAC produces and introduces from other companies about 600 shows every year, attracting more than 100,000 audiences from home and abroad. SDAC holds to such principles as: diversity and tolerance that attracts artists from all over the world, refreshing projects that attract

more audience. SDAC aims at developing into a world-class theater matching with Shanghai the international metropolis.

SDAC was founded on 23 January in 1995, after a merger of two acclaimed theatre companies, the Shanghai People's Art Theatre (founded in 1950) and the Shanghai Youth Drama Troupe (founded in 1957). The Shanghai People’s Art Theatre and the Shanghai Youth Troupe were founded in the early years of the People’s Republic of China by distinguished dramatists Xia Yan, Huang Zuolin and Xiong Foxi respectively. The two companies staged more than 500 plays - classics and modern works by writers home and abroad.

Ever since the establishment of SDAC in 1995, the center never stopped bringing out new production, launching several national tours every year. The center also won various national awards for its scripts, directors, actors and artistic designs. SDAC has also given special emphasis on international exchanges, learning from outstanding theatrical practice all over the world. In the past decade SDAC has staged more than 100 plays from home and abroad, as well as working in co-operation with artists from the UK, US, France, Australia, Canada, Russia, Japan, Singapore,

Rumania, Austria, Italy, Korea, Ireland, Egypt, Germany, Turkey, as well as China’s Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan Province. SDAC was involved in the Chekhov International Theater Festival in Moscow, the International Theater Festival in Singapore, The 9th Seoul Performing Arts Festiva in Korea, The International Shakespeare Festival in England, Sibiu International Theater Festival in Romania, and so on, winning high praise from home and abroad. With the continuous introduction of foreign projects and production of original plays, SDAC has cultivated a stable market for drama among the Shanghai public, thus attracting even more theatrical groups

in and out of China to stage their shows at the center.

In the past few years SDAC also made remarkable achievements in dramatic education and public welfare causes. SDAC has held the annual University Students’ Dramatic Festival since 2004, organizing a professional jury team for the festival, providing free tutor and theater for the final contest performance, as well as sponsoring tours of the outstanding projects in Shanghai’s universities. SDAC also hosts the annual ACT Festival since 2005, without taking financial support from the government. Aiming at introducing good contemporary dramatic works to the Shanghai audience, the festival stages dozens of shows in weeks’ time, attracting performers not only from Japan, India, Korea, Malaysia and other Asian countries, but also companies from the US, Norway, Australia, and so on.

Also, SDAC joins hands with Shanghai Charity Foundation for charity donations. SDAC has turned the Anfu Road where it’s located a dramatic center for Shanghai. Going to plays on Anfu Road has been part of the pop culture among the Shanghai youth, as a lifestyle, or hobby.
