7月18日在伦敦举行的Mercury Priz音乐奖提名晚会上，音乐家Jools Holland公布了提名名单。他说：“每年都有很多唱片出来，选择最好的并不容易，在25000个唱片中选出12个简直是太难了，这次选出的12个获得提名的都很不错，他们在风格上很不同，这些候选艺人都很有天赋，虽然他们各有不同，但却都热爱音乐，这是最重要的。”
年度专辑奖是由一个独立的评委团选出，成员将在9月份Mercury Show的当晚选出最终的获奖者。获奖者可以得到36000美元的奖金。
获得Mercury Priz大奖意味着专辑销售会大大提高，去年的得奖者Antony + The Johnsons之前还不太出名，但他们的专辑I Am A Bird Now获奖后销售额猛升。
Ms Dynamite在2002年获奖后专辑销量增加了7倍。在最终奖项获奖者公布之前，其他单项奖也会在9月5日的颁奖礼上公布。
