Ok, here's the thing. Some of these were singles, some were not, some should have been. But they all have one thing in common; they definitely caught my attention most often throughout the year. And that is what truly great songs do; they remind you every once in awhile of how good they are. They're not only good when they come out, they're good for the days years and months to come。
10. Feist - The Circle Married The Line
What can I say, her voice is a prominent instrument in this track and it weaves rich melodies and soppy bittersweetness throughout。
9. Arcade Fire F. David Byrne - Speaking In Tongues
My fave Montrealer's return with 2 songs from the deluxe edition of "The Suburbs" and one of them has Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne "hooping and hollerin" in the background。
8. The Strokes - Under Cover Of Darkness
This catchy riff sets rooms ablaze with fun. I've seen it happen。
7. The Beastie Boys F. Santigold - Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win
The B-Boys are back and teamed with the hip young star of the moment Santigold have infused they're style with some carib-reggae that just works no matter when or where you hear it。
6. The Weeknd - High For This
He seemed to come out of nowhere and no one knew about this guy from Toronto except that his mixtapes were some rich smooth nouveau soul. Turns out he's worked heavily with Drake as producer. It shows and is all good in tha hood。
5. Kasabian - Days Are Forgotten
I guarantee that if you drop this at any party, an instant groove and head bob will start no matter what your crowd is into. It's that good. PLAY LOUD AND OFTEN!!!
4. Little Dragon - Ritual Union
Little Dragon returns and shows us why Damon Albarn got her to sing on his latest Gorillaz record, Plastic Beach. Sultry and smooth, with some 80's weird keyboard stabs thrown in for good measure。
3. M83 - Midinght City
Anthony Gonzalez, the man behind the band, returns with a double disc of pure 80's electro/shoegaze pop and the first single is even more dreamy than his last record。
2. The Black Keys - Lonely Boy
Is it the video of Derrick T. Tuggle dancing mirthfully by himself for 3 minutes and 13 seconds? Is it Danger Mouse's flawless and slick production? Is it the fact that this duo has honed their sound into hook laden blues rock that sticks in your head after hearing it once? Who knows, I challenge you to not love this song though。
1. Gotye F. Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know
Most heartbreak and loss songs are intensley powerful one sided versions of the truth. Not this one. We hear the plaintive "Woe is me, you broke my heart." cries of Gotye and instantly sypathize, only to be reminded by the object of his anger and betrayal telling him that the relationship wasn't exactly a bed of roses for her either, and he should get over himself。
Genius。
