故事梗概
芭蕾舞剧《大红灯笼高高挂》是根据张艺谋的同名电影改编。故事发生在三十年代，一位年轻的少女被老爷强娶，成为他的第三房太太。大太太、二太太相互争风吃醋，他们也很不情愿的接纳了新娘。
老爷与三位太太在家以打麻将和看京剧消磨时光，经常邀请京剧艺人到家唱堂会。三太太与她旧时的情人--京剧武生幽会。
嫉妒心重的二太太发现并告密于老爷。她的行动不但没有赢得老爷的欢心反而因私自点灯违反家规惹恼老爷，并遭毒打而变疯。三太太、京剧武生、二太太死于老爷的酷刑下。
序幕
上个世纪三十年代。
幽深的大宅院，老爷命人将红灯点亮。一个年轻的女孩被强行塞进花轿，她是老爷新娶的三太太。上轿前，她想起青梅竹马的恋人--戏班子里年轻的小生。
第一幕
迎亲的喜庆气氛中，大太太与二太太怀着复杂的心情接纳这位新人。
洞房花烛夜，新来的三太太拼命抗争，但终于没能摆脱悲剧的命运。
第二幕
唱堂会，打麻将，老爷领着太太们终日消磨时光。
新来的三太太利用短暂的机会与昔日恋人相会，两个年轻人的恋情被居心叵测的二太太发现了。
第三幕
年轻人继续偷偷相爱相会，二太太告密。老爷当场捉拿了这对大胆越轨的恋人。二太太想趁机恢复失去的宠爱，但老爷并不领情。二太太冲动之下，不顾家法，私自抢夺了象征老爷权势的点灯棒，将红灯笼点亮。愤怒的老爷命人将触动家法的二太太处死。
尾声
那对年轻的恋人与二太太同时被带到行刑现场，在死亡面前，他们尽释前嫌，以宽容和爱彼此紧紧拥抱。
封建制度扼杀了年轻的生命和美丽的爱情。
Introduction of the Story
Synopsis
An adaptation of Zhang Yimou's film of the same name, the story is set in the 1930s. A young woman is forced to become the third wife of an old feudal lord. His other two wives, who are jealous of each other, receive the bride unwillingly.
The lord and his three wives pass the time playing mahjong and watching Peking Opera at home. They enjoy the opera so much that they arrange to invite the performers to play mahjong with them. During the mahjong game, the third wife rendezvous with her lover, a martial arts performer in the opera troupe.
The jealous second wife discovers their secret and informs the lord. Despite this act of loyalty, the second wife fails to gain the lord's favour and in fact infuriates him. She rapidly goes insane. In the end, the tense feudal family structure bloodily crashes down.
Overture
In the 1930s, inside the yard of a large, secluded house, the Master orders to lights the red lanterns. A young girl is being forced into a sedan chair. She is the new third wife of the master. Before she climbs in, she remembers her lover - a young actor in an opera troupe.
Act I
Amid the joyful atmosphere of the wedding, the first and second wives welcome this newcomer with mixed feelings. On the wedding night, the new wife struggles hard against her tragic destiny, but finally in vain.
Act II
The master kills time with his wives day after day, watching Peking Opera and playing mahjong. The new wife takes advantage of the short hours of disengagement to meet her old lover, but is discovered by the second wife, who has evil intentions towards her.
Act III
The young lovers continue their secret affairs. The second wife informs against them and the master catches the daring lovers in the act. The second wife hopes to win back her lost love, but receives nothing from the lord. Lost and shattered, the second wife ignores the law the house. She grabs the lighting stick, which is the symbol of the master's power, and lights the red lanterns. In great fury, the lord orders his minions to execute the second wife who dares to break his house law.
Finale
The young lovers and the second wife are brought to the execution ground. Facing their death, they forgive each other and embrace with tolerance and love. Their young lives and beautiful love are strangled by feudalsm.
