THE RED DEPACHMENT OF WOMEN
PROLOGUE
NIGHT-CELL OF LANDOWNER NAN BATIAN
The story took place in Hainan Island during the 10-year civil war. Qionghua, a peasant girl is tied to a pole to be sold. Nan Batian has instructed his lackey Laosi to see to the matter but Qionghua manages to escape from Laosi and runs for her freedom.
SCENE I
Yet, Qionghua is caught and beaten savagely to faint by those captors who came after her. Caught in heavy rain. Nan Batian and his servants flee, believing Qionghua to be dead. Fortunately, Red Army cadres Hong Changqing and signalman Xiao Pang, who are carrying out their investigations in disguise, pass by the coconut field. They rescue Qionghua and on hearing her story, encourage her to join the Red Army.
SCENE II
LATE MORNING, SEVERAL DAYS LATER-IN THE SQUARE OF THE RED ARMY BASE
The Red Army and the people are celebrating the founding of the Red Detachment of Women. Qionghua is warmly received and cared for. She denounces Nan Batian's evil doings while Hong Changqing, as the Party Representative of the Red Detachment, educates the army and the people with Qionghua's and her family's bitter experiences. Qionghua then joins the Red Detachment Army and is presented with a rifle by the company commander.
SCENE III
EVENING-COURTYARD OF NAN BATIAN
The Red Detachment Army plans to attack and raid Nan Batian's land. Hong Changqing disguises himself as an overseas Chinese businessman to attend the birthday feast of Nan Batian. The plan is for him to fire a shot at midnight to signal the Red Detachment to attack. Qionghua sneaks into the premises to contact Xiao Pang. But, on seeing Nan Batian, she cannot control her anger and shoots, thus letting off the signal too soon. Nan Batian is alerted and flees via an underground tunnel. Hong Changqing however remains calm and directs the combat activities. The Red Detachment Army opens the barn and distributes the food to the poor rural villagers. Since Qionghua has gone against orders by the combat plan, Hong Changqing advises her.
